Stressed out and anti-social, that's me. But rather than rant about all the shit that's been happening, I am attempting to celebrate the positive.

1. There have been a lot of good things said re: the travesty of The Last Airbender movie. This has already been linked to all over the place, but I don't care, I feel the need to say it again: These Are My Colors by [livejournal.com profile] ssj10. Relatedly, the extremely white, extremely Texan friends of my SO have been making me proud on this subject -- the expression of absolute horror and disbelief on the face of the one I talked to yesterday as soon as I mentioned that the three heroic leads were all cast white...! And more than one of them has told me that he (all guys in this case -- my SO's group of friends is kind of a sausage-fest... I blame Community for my use of that phrase) would probably have unwittingly gone to see it if I hadn't said something. So hooray for awareness. And hooray for standing up.

2. Wife. I can only hope that the world becomes more like the last part of [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine's incredibly poignant story.

3. I can only hope that the world becomes more like this, too. Christianity and I have had a very rocky relationship, because growing up an agnostic (and, as I eventually figured out, bisexual) in a sea of Lutherans and Evangelicals and Baptists was profoundly irritating. I have mixed feelings about organized religion in general, it's just that with Christianity, it was personal. It has taken me many, many, many of the years since high school to come to terms with and really understand and respect the positive sides of faith and spirituality and religion. It took me even longer to fully feel forgiveness for and acceptance of Christianity in particular, because I had such a hard time trying to evaluate the balance of good and bad that it did in the world. But I think -- I hope, and I'll keep working on it -- that reading this was the last nail in the coffin of my subconscious intolerance. A couple of years into college, an Evangelical friend of mine from high school who had persistently attempted to convert me actually -- sincerely and explicitly and without excuses -- apologized for his self-righteous, judgmental actions. A few years later, well, I'm pretty sure faith saved the life of a really dear friend of mine. And now, seeing this full-fledged movement of acceptance and apology and reconciliation... It brought me to tears. Maybe I can finally let all of those old feelings and kneejerk reactions go. Maybe I can remember, at the most emotional level, that some Christians =/= all Christians. And maybe, hopefully, I'll keep having reasons to feel this way.

4. I finally acquired tickets for American Idiot on Broadway! :D Still within the original planned run, even, so hopefully that means STARK! *dances* Speaking of dancing...

5. ALEX FUCKING WONG. Alex made me proud, and he and Twitch made me laugh and laugh, and god, that hip hop routine was just amazing. His solo was killer, too, and I thought it was sweet that he picked Edward Villella as his inspiration even though it seems like the guy is being kind of pissy about Alex choosing to take a break from the Miami City Ballet to go on the show. Between "Outta Your Mind" this week and "Hallelujah" two weeks back, I kind of seriously adore Alex now. Actually, I think almost everyone did better this week than last week (which seemed a little lackluster to me). Alex was amazing, Ashley was absolutely gorgeous, I thought Billy was fantastic despite the judges' comments, Jose was still unbelievably charming, Robert was great (though I felt like he could've lived in the performance a little more), Adechike was actually really good this week as he found his personality and figured out how to express it through dance, and despite the judges' comments I thought Lauren did a really good job as well, though she, too, needed to live fully in the performance a little more. Kent... I had issues with both his performance and his dancing this week, and sadly I think Melinda proved that they should've kept Cristina last week, even if it was super harsh for Mia and Adam to just say so like that. But I am not going to go into detail because this is meant to be a happiness post! I'm pleased that we get to keep everyone else another week! And seriously, 7/9 dances being various levels of awesome is really good. And, seriously, Alex. It wouldn't surprise me if it got taken down soon, but here's a link to his performance with Twitch that currently works: watch this, for lo, it is hilarious and brilliant!

I am unbelievably in love with Alex. Unbelievably. I was happy to see Melinda go because I just wasn't enjoying her dancing anymore, but I love Billy and Robert to pieces. I'm really not a fan of Adechike at all. I mean, when he dances his solos I really like them, but then he has that cheesy grin and...I don't know, there's just something off-putting about him to me.

I am so with you on all of this. I feel the need to give Adechike props because at least he is improving every week, but ... in the end, I just want Anthony back, and I don't think I'm ever going to get past that. And of the six guys in the top 11, Adechike is by far my least favorite, and has been this whole time. Heck, of the guys I remember us meeting in the top 24, even, he was never one of my favorites -- even though I liked his solo when dancing for his life, I didn't love it, and it was the best thing about him at the time.

As for Melinda, her dancing was taking on an air of franticness and desperation (which manifested in a sort of hesitance in her dancing, not a good combination), and while there totally are reasons for that given that she's been in the bottom three pretty much continuously (and deserved to be there), her response seems to have been to just fake it harder, which basically equalled smile for the camera harder, and it stopped reaching her eyes, and it definitely stopped reaching her feet, and that really didn't help her, especially when coupled with her rather annoying tendency to fall back on cliched, pretentious, oddly repetitious statements. By the end of Vegas week, we already knew that she was an aspiring singer and actress and that tap legends loved her and that she tended to speak in California hipster cliche. She didn't need to keep telling us those things. If she had managed to show actual personality that was as quirky as she represented herself through clothes and way of speaking, I think I would've liked her more. Plus, I've been watching Season 6, and increasingly I felt that not only was she not as good of a tapper as any of the four tap dancers we saw a lot of that season (including the one who didn't even make it to the last round of Vegas week) (and she didn't make up for it by being good at adjusting to other styles, either), but she was also not as truly endearingly quirky and fun as Ellenore. I mean, it didn't help her that she kept being paired with Pasha, who is so sharp and charming and comfortable in his style, it just emphasized all the things she wasn't.

If people are going to keep voting for Adechike (and it seems like they are), well, everyone else in the top 9 I feel super attached to, and almost all of them are simply better dancers than Melinda, and every single one of them is more fun to watch personality-wise, too. (And if you include personality in with the dancing, that would be all of them.) I guess I'm just relieved that both America and the judges agreed with me this week.

Oh, whoops. I meant to avoid the Melinda-rant. But maybe it's better than I got it all out so that I can stop thinking about it... Sorry about basically typing a novelette at you. /o\

BTW, I'm with you on Dominic now. He was amazing last week (two weeks back? the week before the episodes we just saw) when dancing so seriously and intensely with Lauren. And I'm in love with Kathryn's dancing. And Twitch. And Mark. Neil, I still find very pretty, but I feel like his partnering work hasn't been quite up to snuff in a few places. Ade is a rock-solid partner and technical dancer, pretty impressive. I really like Allison, and Comfort's been growing on me a lot. I'm inclined to like Courtney and Anya fine but I still don't have much more of an impression of them yet. Lauren (dark-haired all-star Lauren)... hasn't impressed me much. She's energetic and perky and has her moments, but I don't think she's syncs up with her partners as well as I'd like.

Okay. Focusing on the positive! I love, love, love Alex. He kind of reminds me of my cousins. Except he is also an amazing dancer. And I think he might be even more adorable. I love Billy and Robert, too. (And, uh, I might be shipping them a little.) And if next week is anything like this past week, I will be thrilled. :)

Adechike is someone who I recognize as being talented, but have no affinity for in any way, shape, or form. Whereas I love pretty much everyone else for one reason or another.

If she had managed to show actual personality that was as quirky as she represented herself through clothes and way of speaking, I think I would've liked her more. Exactly this. Plus I really did love all of the tappers from last season, and at first Melinda seemed to be doing something interesting and cool, and then it just got...boring.

I have had the biggest crush on Kathryn since I first saw her. I'm so glad you like Dominic! I think a big part of why I like Neil came from his personality and his solos, which you're obviously not seeing any of. Maybe if you watch that season you'll love him more? I'm with you on the Lauren front, for sure.

I think I fell in love with Alex's dancing first, and then his personality came after, whereas most of the other guys I fell in love with immediately.

And oh my goodness, I have shipped Billy and Robert since the first time they showed us that they dance together already.

Kathryn is adorable, and I am liking Dominic more and more and more. I am totally willing to believe that Neil is more awesome than we've seen so far this season and will hopefully get to watch his season to confirm that. :)

I'm probably going to shipping Billy/Robert for a long, long time. Though honestly there's so much hugging and goofing around and smiling and such, I could see a lot of different ships working for me. But Billy/Robert is definitely the frontrunner!
