Is it a bad thing that I'm already looking ahead to next year's Yuletide and thinking about what I might ask for? At least I have a good draft of this year's story already done, to be edited this weekend, so I don't have to feel like I'm completely jumping the gun, but still.

[livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka and [livejournal.com profile] eowyns and I have been watching The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. on Thursdays before our usual Supernatural episode, and I think it's absolutely going on my list next year. Now it's just a question of figuring out what pairing I want most! Brisco/Bowler? Brisco/Socrates? Brisco/Dixie? (Because Dixie is fucking awesome -- talk about a woman with some kickass agency!) Brisco & Comet? Brisco & his father? Brisco & the Professor? Hell, Brisco/Bly? Man, I'm going to be sad when we run out of episodes. Luckily there are 27 of them, even if it's only one season.

Meanwhile, I'm reading the world's first novel, The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu (translated and abridged by Edward Seidensticker), for the class I'm TAing, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's making it onto next year's Yuletide list, too. It was the rampant Genji/To no Chujo (his brother-in-law) in the "An Autumn Excursion" chapter (in which they catch each other having embarrassing liasons with the same elderly court lady, have a mock fight, and leave together in all camaraderie; earlier in the chapter they perform the dance "Waves of the Blue Ocean" together for the court) that really sparked this plan, but in thinking on it, Genji/Prince Hyobu would be deliciously twisted, and is explicitly supported by the text, as they check each other out in the "Lavender" chapter, each thinking that if the other were of the opposite gender, he would be interested. Twisted because Prince Hyobu is (secretly) the father of the girl that Genji has kidnapped with the intent of eventually making her one of his wives (who is named Murasaki, and seems to be the author's analogue in the book). Not that Prince Hyobu knows that Genji is the one that kidnapped her when the checking out is going on, though Genji is aware of the Prince being her father. Ah, court intrigue!

I feel mildly dirty slashing things I'm reading for class, but I swear, The Tale of Genji just asks for it.
