Title: even the weight of our voices not speaking
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Relationship(s): Ryan Suter/Shea Weber, mentions of Mike Fisher/Carrie Underwood, lots of ensemble friendships
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~10k
Disclaimer: So very, very fictional.
Warnings: None as far as I can tell.
Summary: Summer 2012 is not a good summer for Shea Weber. The several months that follow aren't exactly an improvement. (AKA: All the badly-suppressed pining. ALL OF IT. And some resolution, too.)
Notes: This was written for [livejournal.com profile] littlesignsof as part of her [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins prize. It deals with some of the major canonical events of 2012 as known through the end of October (but diverges after that), and is AU in that some girlfriends/wives have been handwaved away for various reasons. It follows a modified version of the original schedule rather than the actual post-lockout schedule. The title is from the poem A Hunger So Honed by Tracy K Smith. I am so very grateful to [livejournal.com profile] angelsaves for the lovely, fast beta (and for attempting to impose some much-needed order on my commas!), to the mods of mini_wrimo for providing a terrific, motivational writing forum that helped this fic get written, and to [livejournal.com profile] nordicwrites for her wonderfully supportive comments as an early reader of a fair chunk of snippets through the [livejournal.com profile] mini_wrimo process. I also a debt of thanks to [livejournal.com profile] littlesignsof for requesting the pairing! It gave me an excuse to try writing it and ended up inspiring my longest fic yet. Also posted on AO3 here.

Shea is not calling him. He's not calling him because Ryan deserves as much space as he can get to make this decision, and that's that. )

1. Yuletide was lovely and there will be a post forthcoming about it, but things have been hilariously busy and also I've been sick for three weeks, so! I'm finally almost better, but that just means I have to catch up on everything I was supposed to be doing all this time. Ahahahahaha.

2. The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis is running Porn Battle again! Prompts can be left here or here until 21:00 GMT today (Thursday). All fandoms welcome, so go forth and prompt!

3. HOCKEY. ♥_♥ I've been enjoying following the AHL and World Jrs and all, but I'm still ridiculously excited the NHL is back.

4. Speaking of hockey, would anyone be up for betaing ~10k of Shea Weber/Ryan Suter sometime in the next couple of days? Please? ... Bueller? I've been working on this darn thing for what seems like forever, and I'm allllllllmost done and I'd love to post it this weekend to celebrate the start of the season. (Or if you're up for betaing but would like a longer time frame, please let me know that, too? It's mostly a self-imposed deadline, at this point, so it's malleable.)

5. There are too many options for a fifth thing! Cannot decide. So I will just hit post.

When everything happens all at once, all the good and all the bad and all the stress and all the related failure to keep up with all the things and just, ARGH.

On a mostly unrelated note, I'm doing something I had hoped to avoid ever doing, but hopefully it's only temporary -- locking some of my fic on AO3 to registered users only. (Out of curiosity, anyone know how to edit works that are in a closed collection? Is it just me having this problem?) (Apparently it's a bug, so hopefully it'll be fixed soon enough.) It'll still all be publicly posted here (and possibly I'll even start cross-posting to Dreamwidth like I've been meaning to do for forever) unless shit really hits the fan, because LJ has the "minimize in search engine results" options and AO3 does not. (Apparently I was wrong about that! Woot! Which makes it much more likely that I'll unlock it again later, once the attention-on-Hockey-RPF storm has hopefully blown past.) I allow anonymous comments (screened at first, but I'll unscreen them unless asked not to) and don't log IP addresses or use My Guests or anything like that, so you can comment anonymously without fear if you like. Feel free to ping me if you want pdfs or whatnot.

Also I think I have an AO3 invite kicking around, if anyone wants it.

I only have two filters, one for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo and one for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. They will both be active this year! Mini-nano will start out with my long-overdue [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins fic, but will probably get snippets of various other things as well over the course of the month. Yuletide will probably just be me rambling as I work on my assignment (and possibly some treats). If you were on them before, you're still on them. If anyone else wants on them (or if you were on them and want off), please let me know!

Bryan Fuller has developed a new show, Mockingbird Lane, and the pilot will be showing on Friday before Grimm, with the option for a series order if it gets good ratings. It's a reboot of The Munsters, but honestly that's pretty much incidental to my excitement about this. A new Bryan Fuller show! On my television! *flail*

Suddenly I feel struck with the desire to re-watch Wonderfalls. Again. Maybe I will offer it for Yuletide after all...

Incidentally, we're still an episode behind, but I am positively gleeful about a lot of the directions Grimm has been taking itself this season. The world-building and character entanglements get more and more interesting.

I feel super freaking lucky to have an AHL team so nearby. Went to see the Texas Stars host the Houston Aeros tonight and had a really really ridiculously good time, even though the Stars lost. Damn you Mikael Granlund! *shakes tiny fist* The kid had 2G & 2A tonight (to go with his 2A against the Stars last night in Houston) and looked dangerous every time he was on the ice. Which is super promising for the Wild, if the #$*%$&^ NHL season ever starts, but between him and Nick Palmieri (rocking the mountain man look) and Scandella (who I really like! just... not when they're playing the Stars!), among others, the Stars just didn't seem to have the skill level to catch the Aeros. They had some bad luck, too, and definitely spent too much tie in the penalty box, but the chemistry overall just felt kind of off for the Stars tonight. Alas. Though the Eakin line got a couple of goals, including one very nice passing play w/ Dillon on the PK in the 3rd period, so it wasn't all bad.

But oh, just watching hockey again made me so happy. I've missed it so much. And we got seats in row D, close enough to the glass that every time a puck or body hit it, it elicited an almost visceral reaction, and close enough to the ice that it felt like the players could actually hear us shouting. Our section was pretty loud and into it, too, which was pleasing. Even the lone loud guy at the end of our row who was cheering for the Aeros was entertaining.

I'm seeing them again tomorrow (there was a Living Social deal, so tickets were cheap!), maybe they'll have better luck against the bb Avs (Lake Erie Monsters).

Sidenote: I might be shipping Brett Bulmer and Brenden Dillon just a little bit. They had an extended taunting session across center ice in the 2nd period, as the game got progressively chippier (more chippy?). Bulmer cocked his head to the side and had this little smirk on his face, and just kept talking, looking right at Dillon the whole time. It was... intriguing. Because what I really needed was yet another obscure prospect ship. I was already having a lot of thoughts about Nathan MacKinnon and Seth Jones because of the extensive article about them in The Hockey News, and I am hoping that more evidence of Jamie Oleksiak and Jack Campbell's bromance will surface now that they're both rookies with the Texas Stars this year. And there's always Nick Bjugstad & Kyle Rau tearing it up for the Gophers again at the U of M. Minnesota boys! ♥

... I've lived in too many places and like too many teams. It gets confusing. I'll always be a Minnesota girl at heart, and the Blackhawks will always been my first hockey love, but I have to say that I can't be sad that I accidentally Stockholmed myself into following the Stars. It almost makes me feel like a normal sports fan. Novel!

And now back to staring at the Yuletide tagset and trying to figure out what I'm going to request and offer. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Two of my requests are set, but the other two... I just don't know. (Also I promise I have not forgotten about [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins! /o\ Hopefully actually getting to watch hockey again, despite the lockout (GRRRRRRRRR), will inspire me!)

Things have been pretty hectic and stressful, so I've been piling up posts I've been wanting to makeā€¦ and then not actually writing up and posting any of them.

And let's not even discuss how very, very stuck I am on my [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins fic. (Er. Unless troubleshooting/cheerleading a Weber/Suter fic about this summer sounds like a good time to you, in which case, please drop me a note!)

But Yuletide! Yuletide is coming! Nominations are open! (They close on October 3rd.) So even though I still want to post about, among other things, [livejournal.com profile] kink_bingo, the Olympics, Teen Wolf, Grimm, SYTYCD, The Great Food Truck Race, Project Runway, You're Beautiful (the K-drama), Savages, Alphas, Community, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (does Lizzie remind anyone else of Wendy Watson?), and hockey (So many hockey posts I want to make. So many!), instead it is time for the annual nominations & requests musing. My requests are pretty up in the air this year, more so than usual.

I'd somehow forgotten how deeply satisfying it is to peer into the pantry and spontaneously throw together tasty food and then devour it. Even if it's just something as simple as tuna salad made with TONS of dill and tarragon and black pepper (along with more normal amounts of smoked paprika, garlic power, onion powder, onion salt, cayenne pepper, a dollop of whole-grain dijon mustard, and a dash of grated parmesan cheese), piled onto roasted garlic Triscuits.

Hockey season went out with a bang last night. I enjoyed these Cup Finals a lot; there's something to be said for watching two teams that I have mildly positive feelings about play some really good, hard-fought hockey. One of the things I really like about the playoffs is getting to know teams and players I didn't start out that familiar with, and this year has been quite rewarding on that level. Now I'm looking forward to the Draft! :D And the summer trade season and free agent frenzy, of course. Should be a very interesting off-season.

Also yesterday, we finally moved my stuff from the storage unit into the garage here. So for the first time in over fifteen years, all of my stuff is actually in one place. I have been living half out of suitcases and without access to most of my books and such for going on four years. Unpacking and organizing it all is going to be a huge, protracted task, but still. It's all here. This almost makes up for the multiple months of 100+ degree weather and having to drive everywhere, which are perhaps my two least favorite things about Texas. Well, besides the prevailing conservative mindset in most of the state, but hey, at least I live in Austin. It could be so much worse!

Tonight we're planning to watch the last episode of Game of Thrones, season 2. Tomorrow there's another So You Think You Can Dance. I have acquired a copy of Goon to watch sometime later this week when the hockey withdrawal symptoms start to set in.

Life is not always good, and it's definitely not always functional, but right now, this moment? I'll take it.

I have been wanting to make ALL THE POSTS, to go along with needing to do ALL THE THINGS (including ALL THE UNPACKING and ALL THE WRITING), and therefore miring myself in indecision and failing to post/do/accomplish anything. So instead of ALL THE POSTS, for now, have three things.

1. As someone who literally chose her undergrad major by sitting down with a list of the majors my school offered and crossing them off one by one, this might be my favorite xkcd ever.

2. Ryan McDonagh and Adam Henrique FOUGHT during the Game 4! It wasn't much of a fight, really, but I'd been contemplating shipping McDonagh & Henrique for a game or two now (for hatesex-type purposes, primarily), so this made me feel all vindicated. (Of course, I also ship McDonagh & Derek Stepan, in the "have known each other forever" vein. I've been tempted to write them, though it would be easier if they'd been Golden Gophers instead of Badgers together, just 'cause I know a lot more about the University of Minnesota than about Wisconsin, and it would be fun to write something set in the Twin Cities. But perhaps high school, or maybe summer. Hmm.) (Have I mentioned that I really like Ryan McDonagh? I really like Ryan McDonagh. His play has impressed me all year, and he's been a beast in the playoffs. He played over 53 minutes in that triple overtime game vs the Caps. 53! That's nearly an entire hockey game.)

3. The reactions of Team Russia and Team Slovakia upon winning gold and silver, respectively, at Worlds. Yes, I'd like have seen Team USA go farther (and Canada, for that matter, and also Sweden, for Loui Eriksson), but Zdeno Chara wearing Demitra's jersey for the ceremony was basically amazing and made me tear up, and oh, the Russians were SO HAPPY, it was a delight to watch them. They tossed their coach in the air! That is pretty freaking adorable. A couple of random observations: I hadn't realized Datsyuk and Malkin were so fond of each other! I wish Datsyuk and his sneaky sense of humor showed up in more fic. Ovechkin handed the championship trophy Varlamov, who kissed it, raised it over his head, and promptly fell on his ass -- but didn't drop the trophy! Nikulin grabbed it from him to pass on to another Russian player, while Ovechkin and Semin (or Syomin, according to his Team Russia jersey) helped him up, all of them smiling and laughing. Super cute.

= one of the better nights I've had in a while.

Things are really kind of unhinged right now, lots of stuff up in the air, lots of packing to do and administrative and logistical crap going on, both here in Austin and at my parents' in MN. But theoretically, by this summer I might actually get to have (nearly) all my books in one place, unpacked and organized and everything. I've been living out of boxes to one extent or another for years upon years; the idea that I get to settle into one house for the foreseeable future sounds like almost unimaginable luxury to me.

I have lots of feelings about all of that and everything that comes with it, but I also have a lot of feelings about hockey these days. SO MANY FEELINGS. AND SO MUCH BABBLING ABOUT HOCKEY. )

It is nearly dawn, so I stop this entry here. I have a lot of feelings about many other things, too, both fannish and non-fannish, but they are just going to have to wait.

Pleasures, yes; guilt, no. Lucky bastard.

Went to see Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert tonight at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. I cannot remember the last time I laughed so much in the space of a few hours. I can feel my lungs expanding just that little bit extra, like I used to feel after a really good yoga session or voice lesson. It was satisfying on an intellectual level, too -- I think our relationship with food on both an individual and societal level is super complex, full of instincts and feelings and logistics and contradictions and absurdities and joys, and they didn't shy away from any part of that, which I appreciated. But right now, I've got this extra little kick of oxygen or adrenaline or whatever zipping through my veins as the physical side effect of all that laughter, and it feels... god, it feels like being alive.

Yesterday I decided that researching and writing a whole 1500-word fic in less than 24 hours was enough of a happy thing to go with for the little informal meme I'm doing this month. Today, I give you a recent example of one of my favorite things, defense pairs being Weird About Each Other.

Now, I'm not sure anyone will ever manage to be Weirder About Each Other than Duncs & Seabs. It's likely just not possible. But as the second half of this article shows, Shea Weber and Ryan Suter give it the old college try.

Summary: Suter says they're really good friends, Weber says Suter being there is the thing he's most looking forward to about All-Star Weekend, and Dave Lozo straight-up says it sounds like they're married. )

I still want the Blackhawks to hurry up and and win some games and beat the Predators in the standings, but I can't help it, I find them and their mutual admiration society adorable.
